Riofrío is a Spanish sturgeon farmer and caviar producer based in Riofrío, near Loja in Granada. Osborne group accounts recorded it as a group company at 31 January 2025. Spain's agriculture ministry recognised Riofrío's organic production in its 2020 Alimentos de España awards.

Who owns Riofrío?
The legal operating company is Riofrío 1963 Sociedad Limitada, also presented as S.L.U., indicating a single-shareholder company. The commercial registry notice published on 23 September 2021 names Grupo Osborne SA as its sole shareholder, with the entry registered on 15 September. This is more precise than describing the owner simply as Osborne or Bodegas Osborne.
Osborne's 2024 integrated report includes Riofrío 1963, S.L.U. as a wholly owned group company at 31 January 2025. For comparisons of operating models, see the guide to caviar houses and producers.
From fish farming to caviar
The business's origins and the present company's incorporation should not be confused. Spain's agriculture ministry dates the original enterprise to 1963 and credits Luis Domezain as founder. It records a further acquisition in 2019 by the company Riofrío 1963, while Osborne's accounts date that legal entity's incorporation to 25 March 2019.
Osborne subsequently acquired the business in September 2021. These are distinct stages in the history, not competing foundation dates, and the 1963 date should not be read as the start of certified organic caviar production.
The farm, water and production system
The documented production location is Riofrío in the municipality of Loja, Granada. The company lists its central offices at Camino de la Piscifactoría, 2, separately from its visitor-facing shop address. This verifies a Spanish farming operation rather than merely a Spanish brand or distribution office within the wider Spanish caviar sector.
Riofrío says spring water reaches its facilities from the nearby mountain source, about 300 metres away. The ministry's profile describes water temperatures of 14 to 15 °C (57 to 59 °F) throughout the year. These are farming-water temperatures, not instructions for storing caviar.
The producer describes taking water through the farm and returning it to the river after treatment through planted artificial wetlands, which it calls a mature wetland mesocosm. According to the producer, water passes through the farm and planted treatment wetlands before returning to the river. Its claims about water purity and environmental performance remain company statements rather than independently verified effluent measurements.
The producer describes taking water through the farm and returning it to the river after treatment through planted artificial wetlands, which it calls a mature wetland mesocosm.
Riofrío explicitly says that all its caviar is prepared in its own facilities and that it does not repackage. The ministry's 2021 award profile describes the complete fish life cycle taking place at Riofrío.
Species and the names on the range
Osborne's portfolio identifies three farmed species: Acipenser naccarii, sold as Naccarii; Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, sold as Osetra; and Huso huso, sold as Beluga. These species and Spanish production statements come from Osborne's portfolio. Naccarii is the Adriatic sturgeon, covered separately in the Adriatic sturgeon caviar profile.
The distinction matters particularly with Osetra, a trade name that does not identify a species reliably across every producer. Here the company's own mapping supplies the scientific name, while Beluga refers to the species listed by CITES as Huso huso. The IUCN Sturgeon Specialist Group and World Sturgeon Conservation Society proposed the name Acipenser huso in their 2025 classification.
Original, Essence, Tradicional and Excellsius appear in Riofrío's range as commercial product or selection names. They should not be treated as additional species or official quality grades. Read the named species, ingredients and certification information for the particular product rather than relying on the collection name alone.
What Riofrío's organic claim covers
Riofrío presents itself as the world's first certified organic caviar producer and displays CAAE certification branding. Spain's agriculture ministry also described it as the world's first certified organic caviar in 2021. A ministry document from 2006 records CAAE certification covering both production and products.
The current EU legal framework is Regulation (EU) 2018/848, applicable since 1 January 2022. Its aquaculture requirements sit in Annex II, Part III, with further production-system and stocking-density provisions in Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/464. Organic is therefore a controlled production and labelling claim, not another word for spring-fed, natural or preservative-free.
For fish, the rules address matters including feed, water quality, stocking conditions, handling and breeding. The European Commission specifically identifies restrictions on artificially induced spawning using hormones and measures to minimise handling stress. These requirements describe the scheme; they are not an inspection report on Riofrío.
CAAE's organic control identity in Andalusia is associated with code ES-ECO-001-AN. Organic status depends on the applicable certificate and the product's compliance with organic rules.
An organic certificate identifies the operator, certified activities, product categories and validity period, according to EU certification rules. The broader distinction between certified operations and certified products is explained in organic and certified sturgeon farming.
Recognition in Britain, Northern Ireland and the US
Organic recognition abroad depends on the destination's rules, not simply the presence of an EU logo. Switzerland, the UAE, China, Japan, Russia and Australia have separate import rules. The 125 g personal effects exemption is conditional.
| Jurisdiction | Position | Authority | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Great Britain | EU-certified organic products can enter under the applicable recognition arrangements; importers and first consignees require certification. | Defra, organic imports guidance | November 2026 |
| Northern Ireland | Direct imports from Spain do not currently require an organic certificate of inspection. | Defra, organic imports guidance | November 2026 |
| United States | Aquatic animals are excluded from the EU and US organic equivalence arrangement. An EU organic certificate alone does not confer USDA organic certification. | USDA Agricultural Marketing Service | November 2026 |
The recognition and certification distinctions above follow the destination authorities' published guidance.
Great Britain and Northern Ireland should not be treated as interchangeable regulatory destinations. Defra's September 2026 guidance currently waives certificates of inspection for direct EU organic imports to both, but this does not remove importer certification or other applicable import requirements.
Reading origin, processing and certification
Spain's CITES register lists Riofrío 1963 S.L. as an exporter and processing or repackaging operation under code ES120000140-GR. That combined register heading does not contradict the company's statement that it produces rather than repackages caviar: the register does not distinguish the two activities in this entry.
On an individual tin, separate three questions: which species produced the roe, where the roe originated, and which operator processed or repacked it. A Spanish brand address is not sufficient evidence of Spanish roe origin, and a CITES label provides traceability information rather than independent proof of the contents. This is a distinction between documentary identification and authentication, not a finding against this producer.
Organic certification answers a different question about compliance with production and processing rules. Check the organic control-body identification against the current certificate rather than treating CITES registration as an organic approval or a sensory quality award. The producer-register checking guide explains how to verify the facility record.
What it is known for
Riofrío's distinctive combination is a documented Spanish farm, an established association with Naccarii and a longstanding organic positioning. The company describes planted treatment wetlands and says it processes all its caviar at its own facilities.
The useful connoisseur's question is therefore not simply whether a tin says Riofrío, but which species, preparation, origin and currently certified product it represents.
The company documents guided farm visits and tastings; see caviar farm visits in France, Italy and Spain for the regional visiting context.
